 Fairfield Hospital's theatre upgrade

Fairfield Hospital's theatre upgrade

26/11/2008 10:48:00 AM
IN his first visit since picking up the portfolio in September, Health Minister John Della Bosca visited Fairfield Hospital last week to open the newly redeveloped operating theatres.

All four theatres have been upgraded at a cost of $880,000, with new equipment including bariatric operating tables that can hold up to 454kilograms instead of 135kilograms, and digital laparoscopic cameras with photo printing capabilities for clearer photos in patient files.

Mr Della Bosca said Fairfield Hospital had been targeted for the upgrade because it performed almost 5000 operations in the last financial year.

``South western Sydney is one of the fastest growing areas in the state the refurbishment and new equipment will enable the hospital to meet the community's expanding health service needs,'' he said.

Hospital general manager Anthony Schembri used the new vascular ultrasound machine to locate nerves and muscles in Mr Della Bosca's neck, which makes a ``wonderful, big difference'' to the anaesthetist's job.

Nursing Unit Manager, Michael Ashby, said the upgrade also included bispectral anaesthetic monitors to observe a patient's level of consciousness throughout the procedure.

``Sometimes you have a patient wake up at the end of their surgery just as there's a lot of activity in preparation to move them, but they think they've woken while the operation is still happening,'' Mr Ashby said.

``This monitor shows them and us that they've maintained unconsciousness throughout the procedure.''

Smithfield MP Ninos Khoshaba also attended the unveiling, commending Fairfield Hospital staff for their dedication to the community and the outstanding results that won them a Baxter award last week.

Other new equipment includes dual theatre lights, arthoscopes, video colonoscopes and gastroscopes for the theatres, as well as a disinfecting machine and an autoclave for sterilising more equipment.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
