TWENTY-NINE young people are eager to have a say on Fairfield's future following their appointment to the 2008 Youth Advisory Committee.

The committee is made up of residents aged 16 to 25-years-old, chosen for their demonstrated interested in serving the community.

Tarsha Gavin, 19, is a committee leader.

``We form partnerships with local high schools and liaise with other branches of the council to promote the youth services available in the local area,'' she said.

``Fairfield has a large, diverse youth population and being part of the committee allows me to work towards improving opportunities for them in a range of areas.''

The committee will attempt to increase its community profile via a weekly segment on radio station 2GLF as well as MySpace and facebook web pages.

Mayor Nick Lalich encouraged the new members to become more aware of crime prevention strategies, community safety, the arts and recreation.

``The success of this year's Bring It On! youth festival is testament to the skills of our young people in organising such an event,'' Mr Lalich said.

``Being in the committee will give you diverse skills.

``We look forward to seeing the exciting initiatives you can bring to Fairfield.''

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
