On the ball with Michael Chammas - July 30, 2008

ENOUGH has been said about the character of Sonny Bill Williams in the last few days for me to write more about the disloyal and selfish departure of the man.

But what I am going to talk about is the nature of sportsmanship and team camaraderie.

Some of the best moments of my life so far have been spent on the sporting field.

It's not about winning premierships or trophies. It's about giving it your all and knowing that the person standing beside you has got your back and would be willing to ``go to war'' for you. When Williams abandoned his team mates 48 hours out from their match against the Dragons, he executed one of the most common cliches when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

I hope he never puts on an NRL jersey again and that other players in rugby league get the message loud and clear.

He should take a leaf out of the Marconi Stallions 2008 Premier League book.

Full credit to the boys from Bossley Park.

They haven't had the best of seasons, but they have stuck together as a team, even without a coach in recent weeks.

They upset the competition frontrunners the Sutherland Sharks with a 3-0 victory a fortnight ago and almost managed to pip the equal first placed Wollongong Wolves last Sunday, eventually going down 3-2.

There will be a lot of nail biting at Sydney United in the next week as they await the result of the Sydney Olympic v APIA match.

It was 0-0 in the first half before lightning and storm conditions forced the teams off the field.

The match is to be rescheduled, but if APIA claim victory they will jump ahead of United on the table and push the Reds out of the top five with one match remaining.

The boys from Edensor Park will play with their season on the line at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday against Sydney Olympic.

The Cabramatta Two Blues may have changed the colour of their jerseys to pink for their match against the Wentworthville Magpies, but what didn't change was their impressive form. They managed to rack up a 42-10 win at New Era Stadium last Sunday while also raising $13,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. For more match photos visit www.fairfieldchampion.com.au.
