Power in the pool

AT THE same time as Australian swimmers in Beijing were showing what they could do, young Fairfield swimmers were impressing judges and audiences at the state championships over the weekend.

Mounties swim school was represented at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre by Jayden Namroud, 12, Daniel Muscat, 13, Paige Chandler, 10, and siblings Brodie and Brock Westwood, 17 and 11.

Mounties head coach Clinton Camilleri said it was ``pretty tough''.

``It's a state-wide competition and NSW is the best stat ,'' he said.

Brock Westwood had a full day of competition, clinching fifth and sixth places in the 50m and 100m butterfly respectively, and 12th and 16th in the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke. He swam the 50m freestyle in 30.90seconds.

Paige Chandler finished seventh in the 50m butterfly in 36.10seconds and swam just over double that time in the 100m butterfly.

Daniel Muscat powered through the 100m breast stroke in one minute 20seconds and came 14th in the 200m event.

Jayden Namroud came in at 13th place in the 200m backstroke.

``Just about all of their swims were personal bests and they're pretty happy,'' Camilleri said.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
