 Black mark against Williams

Black mark against Williams

22/08/2008 1:28:37 AM

AFTER watching Sonny Bill Williams make his starting debut for French rugby union club Toulon, former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones has predicted he will make the All Blacks squad for the 2011 World Cup. Williams made his second appearance for Toulon in a pre-season trial on Wednesday night and despite Jones's Saracens side winning 32-27, the former Bulldogs superstar made his mark on the match with a second-half try. "He showed tonight that he is going to be an extremely talented player," Jones told Channel Seven. "He's got all the skills and some of his offloads were just exceptional. Once he starts to understand the game better he could be one of the best transferers from a league player to a union player. You know, I could see him playing for the All Blacks in the 2011 World Cup."

SBW's home 'invasion' While Williams is in France, interest in the Caringbah house he is trying to sell has gone through the roof - thanks partly to a secretly recorded tour of the property that was posted on News Ltd websites last week. Not that the agents at Southern Waters Real Estate are impressed by the video, which they believe was filmed by a couple posing as prospective buyers. As a result, plans to hold further open houses have been cancelled and all inspections are now by appointment only. The house is due to go to auction on September 6.

Man's brotherly love Anthony Mundine cut his French holiday short to raise the $750,000 for the release of Williams from the Bulldogs. Mundine was due back in Australia yesterday but returned on Monday morning and spent the day visiting banks to come up with the funds at short notice. "I just look at it as helping out a brother," said Mundine, who re-affirmed he was now officially Williams's co-manager. "Sonny was grateful, he's just glad it's over and he can move on now to fulfil his dream."

Tigers in stadium war The battle for "product" is intensifying between ANZ Stadium and the SCG Trust with the mail running strong that Wests Tigers had done the deal to move matches to Sydney Football Stadium. Tigers chief executive Steve Noyce met Trust boss Jamie Barkley yesterday but described claims a deal was imminent as "lukewarm" - as he has each day this week. Sin Bin hears the push to take home matches to the SFS has been pushed by the Balmain side of the joint venture. The Wests side of the merger are none too pleased.

What's Campo got to do? What's Terry Campese got to do to win the Raiders' man-of-the-match award? Despite Campese scoring 36 points two weeks ago in Canberra's record defeat of Penrith, the award went to rookie halfback Marc Herbert. Last week against Newcastle, Campese scored a try and laid on four more but he again lost out - this time to boom back-rower Joe Picker.

Millions of reasons to cheer ANZ Stadium has copped its fair share of criticism this year, but it will celebrate a milestone during the double-header tomorrow when the five-millionth rugby league fan goes through its turnstiles, since it opened in 1999. CEO Ken Edwards maintained the milestone was a "great result" for the ground and the game. "This year we will have had more rugby league fans through the gates than ever before," he said. The fan will be treated to VIP seats and given grand final tickets.

Mini's big comeback Sydney Roosters club doctor John Orchard says the plan with fullback Anthony Minichiello, who is recovering from a bulging disc in his neck, is to get him at least one game back before the finals. "Anthony is back in full training," Orchard said yesterday. "He definitely won't play against Cronulla tomorrow night - he hasn't been back in training long enough to be ready for that - but barring a setback he will come back either against the Rabbitohs next week or the Dragons in the final round."

Holmes a Court on outer The hunt is still on for the culprit who pinged a socket at Manly centre Steve Matai at ANZ Stadium last Sunday. But judging by the reception co-owner Peter Holmes a Court received, he is as much on the nose in Southsland as the Manly firebrand. Our spies tell us he received a very lukewarm reception when introduced to the Legends Room by compere Jimmy Smith before the match.

Now Koopu courts union Warriors forward Wairangi Koopu is the latest league player who is seeking to get a rugby union contract overseas. Koopu, 28, has been told by the Warriors he is free to look for another club, but he fancies the idea of looking for another code. "As I've got older I've wondered whether a change of code could be on the cards," he said. "It's exciting, and … I could probably go to a club anywhere in the world. Japan, Wales, Italy, France, who knows?"

Quote of the week "How soft was that? Under sixes do worse than that." - Tiger Bryce Gibbs to referee Matt Cecchin after being penalised for dropping his forearm onto the head of Parramatta's Krisnan Inu.
